Plans for Cucalorus

I have never been to an official film festival before. My expectations are unknown mainly because I'm not sure what will happen. Fortunately, I assisted Gabby with a project she entered, allowing me to get a pass for free. When attending, I want to network with different filmmakers and get a sense of the film community. Being surrounded by others who find film as engaging as I do allows for an enticing experience I never had. The experience of watching people's other work could serve as a conduit of inspiration for future films I create, so using Cucalorus to influence my own film making is something I plan to take from attending.

Films I want to watch:
Quest, Thursday 4:15pm - This film sounds incredibly sad and I love to torment myself with sad things. From its short description it seems to have a coming of age story where an abused kid finds help from his teacher. It sounds interesting.

Unapologetic, Thursday 7:45pm - I'm always on board for some black power activism! It looks like an amazing documentary commentating on black issues. Social justice movies are my favorite because of the powerful message they convey.

Liberation Day, Friday 1:15pm - I LOVE the idea behind this movie. The first rock band to ever perform in North Korea...it sounds surreal. Movies where Western culture clashes with East Asian always captures my attention due to the culture being so different.

This Taco Truck Kills Fascists, Saturday 4:45pm - Like Unapologetic, I'm always on board for social justice for minorities. It sounds like a mixture of comedy and current events which is right up my alley as well!

Midnighters, Saturday 10pm - I want to see this film simply because it sounds so ridiculous. "the family is thrust into a deepening mystery, they discover that no one is who they seem – including each other"...it sounds absolutely terrible! Hopefully it will surprise me, but the description of it sounds so campy.

Synesthesia and Cymatics

I find synesthesia to be interesting because the relating something such as the number 6 looking like it's green is peculiar. From what I can tell, interpretations of the number 6 will vary from person to person. One synesthesiac might see it being blue instead of green, and another will say it smells like lavender and is purple. I sometimes view things in this way, but only with songs. I tend to associate the sound of music with different seasons. Such as "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga always sounded like the season of Winter to me while "Lust for Life" sounds like Summer. Cymatics are a phenomenon in which sound takes form visually. I have never heard of cymatics before this class, but it makes sense that frequencies have their own personal patterns like snowflakes. Sounds of My Surroundings

I was excited to "hear" (get it!?) that one of our assignments this week was listening to the surroundings. Time moves so fast in the modern worlds that it's seldom that we have the opportunity to slow down and smell the roses, or in this case, listen to them. There are two places I find meaningful that I exercised this assignment at, Holden Beach and my father's beach house there. Both had various sounds that I otherwise would have overlook if I didn't give it much thought. On the beach I laid out a towel and settled on top of it. It was pitch black that night and the only source of light was the reflection of the moon. The ocean roared as wave after wave crashed onto the beach. The swish swash of the water adjacent to my body grew louder and louder as the tide rolled in. A loud buzz passed by from a coast guard truck disrupted the natural sound for an instance. Balazs' Article

Balazs' article tackles the differing sounds employed in film. The aspect of this article that stuck out to me the most was the description of silence having it's sound from the space. This concept of silence is something to feel as we experience the foreground coming into the front of our senses.  Asynchronous sound, or off-screen sound, is another part of film I find important. The idea of introducing a cohesive mood through the integration of varying sounds is something I always do when editing videos. It's a simple idea that can tie a scene together. This method is cost efficient as well, since the implication that something is there can make up enough for not having it on the screen.
